Getting Approved for Long Term Care Insurance

Due to the insurance companies need to manage the risk of the large benefit amounts within policies, getting approved for long term care insurance can be complex; so it makes sense to be aware of the process and challenges before you begin.

If you are in poor health or already receiving certain types of services, you may not qualify for long-term care insurance, as almost all individual policies require medical underwriting. In some cases, you may be able to buy a limited amount of coverage, or coverage at a higher “sub-standard” rate.

An applicant for long term care insurance will definitely not be approved if they already require assistance with bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, urinary or bowel continence, or transferring between your bed or a chair (the 6 ADLS) and/or already use or need a home health care, adult day care, assisted living or nursing home care, use a multi-pronged cane, oxygen, walker or wheelchair.

Additionally, you are unable to be approved for coverage if you have any of the following conditions or health concerns:

  • AIDs or HIV infection
  • Alzheimer's Disease
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Dementia
  • Hemophilia (other than Von Willebrand disease)
  • Active Hepatitis C, Non-A, Non-B, or Autoimmune
  • Kidney Failure
  • Liver Cirrhosis
  • Memory Loss
  • Mid - Advanced Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Paralysis
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Post-Polio Syndrome
  • Schizophrenia
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
